SOUTHERN EUROPE

Southern Europe encompasses the three major peninsulas that extend from the European continent into the Mediterranean Sea: the Iberian Peninsula to the west, the Italian Peninsula in the center, and the Balkan Peninsula to the east, along with their associated island groups and a collection of small independent states. The region was the cradle of Western civilization, producing the ancient Greek and Roman cultures whose philosophical, legal, artistic, and political traditions formed the foundation of much of the modern world.
