NORTHERN EUROPE

Northern Europe encompasses the countries and territories of Scandinavia, the Baltic Sea region, the British Isles, and the North Atlantic, stretching from the British Isles in the southwest to the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard in the far north. The region was shaped significantly by Norse and Viking expansion between the 8th and 11th centuries, the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century, and the maritime empires that several of its nations built and maintained across the globe during the colonial era.
