Sweden is the largest Scandinavian country by area, occupying the eastern portion of the Scandinavian Peninsula and bordered by Norway to the west and Finland to the northeast, with coastline along the Baltic Sea and the Kattegat strait. It was one of the major military powers of 17th century Europe during the period known as the Swedish Empire and has maintained a policy of neutrality and non-alignment in military affairs for more than two centuries, making it one of the longest-standing non-belligerent states in the world.
