FINLAND

Finland is a Nordic country in Northern Europe bordered by Sweden, Norway, and Russia, with a southern coastline along the Gulf of Finland. It contains more than 180,000 lakes, giving it one of the highest concentrations of inland water of any country in the world, and was part of the Russian Empire from 1809 until it declared independence in 1917. It is one of the world’s northernmost countries, with roughly a third of its territory lying above the Arctic Circle.
