I’ve made some of my most life-changing decisions while traveling.

During a trip to China, I realized why I was so unhappy with my job at the time—and then a month later while hiking through the cloud forests of Honduras, I figured out exactly what I wanted to do next in my career. Being in totally different environments, navigating language barriers, and exploring parts of the world I never thought I’d see helped me to think creatively and put things into a perspective I don’t think I would have reached otherwise.

And it’s not just decision-making. Travel has made me more curious, helped me connect with people more easily, made me more empathetic…there are tons more examples, but I want to speed things up and get to how travel can help you!

Visiting new destinations near and far can expand your horizons and deepen your understanding of the world and yourself. Personal growth doesn’t come without challenges though!

I’m a very introverted person, and I prefer solo travel to any other type. I feel much more present, observant, and creative, whereas when I travel with someone else, I lean a bit much on what their plans are and find myself zoning out more than I’d like. (Though to be fair, you might be the type of person who’s empowered by playing tour guide with a travel partner!)

Traveling with a Partner

Traveling with a partner—a romantic partner, friend, or family member—presents a unique opportunity for personal growth through shared experiences. Exploring new destinations together can strengthen your bond and improve your communication and conflict-resolution skills.

My husband and I joke that we didn’t know if we were truly compatible until we flew together—navigating international airports and observing each other’s airplane etiquette styles can be an eye-opening experience! Fortunately for us, we’re completely in sync on those fronts…the frustrations of delays, confusion with missing bags or changed gates, and every other hiccup in travel plans can be an opportunity to embrace and practice patience, communication, and flexibility.

Group Travel

Group travel can be a fantastic way to explore different places while having the chance to see those destinations through other people’s eyes. You can get unique perspectives from fellow travelers along your journey, and can swap stories and find inspiration in diverse perspectives and backgrounds. There’s also safety in numbers, which can help you relax a little bit and enjoy the ride. Of course you’ll also need to be flexible and adaptable to the group’s schedule and preferences, which can be challenging if you value independence and control over your itinerary!

There are a lot of reasons to plan a trip that will help you grow as a person. Maybe you’re planning a change and want to be somewhere else for a while to think through it.
