MICRONESIA

Micronesia is a subregion of Oceania comprising thousands of small islands scattered across the western Pacific Ocean, north of Melanesia and east of the Philippines. The name derives from the Greek for “small islands,” an apt description of a region where the total land area is modest but the expanse of ocean it covers is vast, stretching across an area roughly comparable in size to the continental United States. The islands were settled by Austronesian-speaking peoples thousands of years ago and became strategically significant to multiple colonial and military powers throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
