PALAU
Palau is an archipelago nation in the western Pacific Ocean consisting of more than 500 islands, situated east of the Philippines and north of Indonesia. It was the site of the Battle of Peleliu in 1944, one of the most costly engagements of the Pacific theater of World War II, and entered into a Compact of Free Association with the United States in 1994 following decades of administration as part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. Its marine environment, including the rock islands of its southern lagoon, is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered among the most biodiverse in the Pacific.
