Portugal occupies the southwestern corner of the Iberian Peninsula, bordered by Spain to the north and east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south, and administers the Atlantic archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira. It was one of the earliest and most far-reaching of the European colonial powers, establishing a maritime empire in the 15th and 16th centuries that extended across Africa, Asia, and South America, and Portuguese remains the sixth most spoken language in the world, with the majority of its speakers in Brazil.
