MELANESIA

Melanesia is a subregion of Oceania encompassing a chain of islands in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, stretching from Papua New Guinea in the west to Fiji in the east. The region contains some of the most linguistically diverse territory on earth, with Papua New Guinea alone accounting for more than 800 distinct languages, and its islands have been inhabited for tens of thousands of years, representing some of the earliest human migration out of Africa and into the Pacific.
