The Philippines is an archipelago nation in Southeast Asia consisting of more than 7,600 islands situated in the western Pacific Ocean, bordered by the South China Sea to the west and the Philippine Sea to the east. It is the only predominantly Christian country in Asia, a legacy of more than three centuries of Spanish colonial rule, and was subsequently a territory of the United States from 1898 until independence in 1946.
