ECUADOR

Ecuador sits on South America’s northwestern Pacific coast, crossed by the equator from which it takes its name, and bordered by Colombia and Peru. Despite being one of the smallest countries on the continent, it contains four distinct geographic regions: the Pacific coast, the Andean highlands, the Amazon basin, and the Galápagos Islands, an archipelago roughly 1,000 kilometers offshore that played a central role in Charles Darwin’s development of the theory of natural selection.
