HAWAII

Hawaii is the only US state located entirely outside of North America, situated in the central Pacific Ocean roughly 2,400 miles from the California coast, and the only state to have been an independent monarchy before annexation by the United States in 1898. Its six main islands offer a range of landscapes found nowhere else under a single state’s jurisdiction, from the active lava fields of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island to the sea cliffs of Molokai, the Na Pali Coast of Kauai, and the deeply researched marine environments of the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument.
