Honduras is a large Central American country bordered by Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua, with coastline along both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It was home to the Copán Maya kingdom, one of the most intellectually and artistically significant of the classic Maya polities, and the ruins of Copán are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their unusually well-preserved hieroglyphic stairway and sculptural detail.
