Hungary is a landlocked country in Central Europe, bordered by Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, and Slovenia. It was the eastern half of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, one of the major powers of 19th and early 20th century Europe, and its capital Budapest, formed by the unification of the cities of Buda and Pest in 1873, straddles the Danube River and contains a significant concentration of late 19th century architecture recognized collectively as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
