New Mexico contains the largest concentration of Native American and Spanish colonial heritage of any US state, with the ancient pueblo settlements of Chaco Culture National Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the 400-year-old Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe, the oldest continuously occupied public building in the United States. White Sands National Park, a field of gypsum dunes covering 275 square miles, is the largest gypsum dunefield in the world, and Carlsbad Caverns National Park contains one of the largest and most decorated cave systems in North America.
