Designated Quiet Spaces, Yoga & Meditation Rooms, and Multi-Faith Chapels in US Airports

Navigating airports can be intensely stressful – the noise, confusion, and chaos are enough to drive the calmest person up a wall. Thankfully you don’t have to seek out a table at an overpriced restaurant, or a seat in an empty gate. There are more comfortable (even reinvigorating!) options for stressed-out travelers at many airports across the country – here are just a few to check out next time you’re buzzing your way through security and looking for a quiet spot to recharge.

Free Yoga and Meditation Rooms in US Airports

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) opened the first US airport yoga room in 2012. You’ll find three yoga rooms at SFO, located in Terminals 1, 2, and 3. They’re open Sunday through Saturday between 4:00am and 11:00pm, and are free of charge. SFO also has the Berman Reflection Room for meditation, located in the Dianne Feinstein International Terminal, Level 3. This room is open Sunday through Saturday between 9:00am and 7:00pm.

Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) has a free Yoga Room on the Mezzanine Level of the Terminal 3 Rotunda. The space features bamboo floors, mirrors, yoga mats, and a video monitor that plays nature images with soothing sounds or yoga technique demonstrations. Open 6:00am to 10:00pm daily.

Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) offers a free yoga studio in Terminal E. The studio is open 24 hours with mats and video provided.

Miami International Airport (MIA) has a Yoga Room in Terminal H, open daily from 9:00am to 9:00pm.

Designated Quiet Zones and Rest Areas in US Airports

Denver International Airport (DEN) – The Rest & Recharge area on the Concourse A Mezzanine offers comfy lounge seating, privacy partitions, and plenty of charging outlets. It’s free to use and designed to be quieter than the main terminal.

Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) has two free quiet seating areas inside the secure area of Terminal 1 on the Mezzanine Level overlooking the Airport Mall. These are designed for reading, resting, meditation, or prayer.

Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) has a 24-hour Meditation Room located in the ticketing area of Terminal 2. It’s pre-security, open around the clock, and provides a quiet space for reflection, meditation, or prayer.

San Diego International Airport (SAN) features a meditation area in Terminal 2, with simple wood benches and glass panel walls depicting waves of water that artist Norie Sato photographed from San Diego Harbor.

Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) has a meditation space near baggage claim where you can spend some time decompressing from a long flight.

Free Outdoor Decks and Terraces in US Airports

Denver International Airport (DEN) has three outdoor decks with firepits on Concourses A, B, and C – all free and open to all passengers from 6:00am to 10:00pm, weather permitting. Each includes comfortable seating, firepits, and pet relief areas.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has two outdoor observation terraces. The SkyTerrace atop Terminal 2 is pre-security, free, and offers 180-degree runway views and museum exhibitions. It’s open Friday through Monday from 10:00am to 6:00pm. There’s also a post-security Outdoor Terrace in the International Terminal G, open Sunday through Saturday from 7:00am to 11:30pm.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) – The East Terrace Patio near Gate 2 just reopened to the public after a two-year stint as a private lounge. It offers lounge chairs, picnic tables, and front-row views of planes taking off. It’s open daily from 8:00am to 8:00pm.

Multi-Faith Chapels That Double as Quiet Spaces in US Airports

Most major airports have interfaith chapels or reflection rooms that welcome all travelers (not just those seeking religious services). These are usually the quietest, most under-used spaces in the terminal:

  • Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) has chapels in all five terminals, two accessible pre-security.
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX) has a Sensory Room inside the all-faith Airport Chapel pre-security in Terminal 4. It’s open from 8:00am to 8:00pm Sunday through Friday, and 8:00am to 4:00pm Saturday. The chapel is open from 5:00am to 10:00pm daily.
