MICHIGAN

Michigan is unique among US states in consisting of two separate peninsulas divided by the Straits of Mackinac, connected by the Mackinac Bridge, one of the longest suspension bridges in the Western Hemisphere. It borders four of the five Great Lakes, giving it the longest freshwater coastline of any political jurisdiction in the world, and its Upper Peninsula contains Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, where sandstone cliffs striped with mineral deposits rise directly from the shore of Lake Superior.
