KANSAS

Kansas occupies the geographic center of the contiguous United States and was one of the most contested territories in the years leading up to the Civil War, a period known as Bleeding Kansas during which pro- and anti-slavery factions fought for control of the new state’s political identity. The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve near Strong City protects one of the last remaining stretches of the tallgrass prairie ecosystem that once covered a significant portion of the North American interior, and the Boot Hill Museum in Dodge City preserves the history of the cattle trade era that defined the state’s economy in the 1870s and 1880s.
