ILLINOIS

Illinois is home to Chicago, one of the most architecturally significant cities in the world, where the modern skyscraper was effectively invented following the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and where buildings by Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Mies van der Rohe helped define 20th century architecture. Beyond Chicago, the state contains Cahokia Mounds, the largest pre-Columbian settlement north of Mexico, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose central mound contains more material by volume than the Great Pyramid of Giza.
