Costa Rica is a Central American country bordered by Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the south, with coastline along both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. It abolished its military in 1948, a decision enshrined in its constitution, making it one of a small number of countries in the world with no standing army, and has since directed a significant portion of its national resources toward education and environmental conservation.
