FRENCH POLYNESIA

French Polynesia is a French overseas collectivity comprising 118 islands and atolls spread across a vast area of the southern Pacific Ocean, roughly the size of Western Europe in terms of ocean coverage but with a total land area smaller than the state of Rhode Island. It is divided into five island groups, the most internationally recognized of which is the Society Islands, home to Tahiti and the island of Bora Bora, and has been the subject of ongoing independence discussions, with a pro-independence party holding a majority in its local assembly since 2023.
