SCOTLAND

Scotland occupies the northern third of the island of Great Britain, bordered by England to the south, and includes more than 790 offshore islands, among them the Hebrides, Orkney, and Shetland archipelagos. It was an independent kingdom for centuries before the Acts of Union in 1707 merged it with England and Wales to form the Kingdom of Great Britain, and it retains its own distinct legal system, educational tradition, and national church, as well as a devolved parliament established in 1999.
