Ukraine is the largest country located entirely within Europe by area, bordered by Russia, Belarus, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova, with coastline along the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. It was a central republic of the Soviet Union and declared independence in 1991, and its capital Kyiv is one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe, having served as the capital of Kievan Rus, a medieval federation that is regarded as the cultural and political forerunner of several modern Eastern European states.
