Uzbekistan is a doubly landlocked country in Central Asia, meaning it is surrounded entirely by other landlocked countries, bordered by Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Turkmenistan. It was the historical core of the Silk Road’s Central Asian segment, and its cities of Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva contain some of the best-preserved examples of medieval Islamic architecture in the world, several of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
