TURKMENISTAN

Turkmenistan is a largely desert country in Central Asia, bordered by Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Iran, and the Caspian Sea. The Karakum Desert covers roughly 80 percent of its territory, and the country sits atop some of the world’s largest natural gas reserves, a resource that has shaped its economy and its political relationships since independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
