NEW HAMPSHIRE

New Hampshire contains the Presidential Range of the White Mountains, including Mount Washington, which held the world record for directly measured surface wind speed for more than six decades and remains one of the most meteorologically extreme summits accessible to the general public in the world. The state was among the most politically active of the original colonies, the first to establish its own independent government in 1776, and its Canterbury Shaker Village is one of the best-preserved examples of Shaker communal architecture and craftsmanship in the United States.
