NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand is an island nation in the southwestern Pacific Ocean comprising two main islands, the North Island and the South Island, along with the smaller Stewart Island and hundreds of minor islands. It was one of the last landmasses on earth to be settled by humans, with Polynesian ancestors of the Māori arriving around 1280 CE, and was subsequently colonized by Britain in the 19th century. The Treaty of Waitangi, signed in 1840 between the British Crown and Māori chiefs, remains the foundational document of New Zealand’s constitutional and bicultural identity.
