AUSTRALIA
Australia is the world’s sixth largest country by area and the only nation to occupy an entire continent, situated between the Indian and Pacific Oceans in the Southern Hemisphere. It has been inhabited by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples for at least 65,000 years, representing one of the longest continuous cultural histories of any human population on earth, and was colonized by Britain beginning in 1788, initially as a penal settlement at what is now Sydney. Its geographic isolation over millions of years produced a fauna found nowhere else in the world, including the majority of the world’s marsupial species.
