Bahrain is a small island nation in the Persian Gulf, connected to Saudi Arabia by the King Fahd Causeway and situated north of Qatar. It is one of the smallest countries in Asia by area and was the first state in the Arabian Gulf to discover oil, in 1932, a development that transformed its economy decades before neighboring states underwent similar changes.
