WISCONSIN

Wisconsin has been the center of American dairy production for more than a century, a fact embedded deeply enough in its identity that its residents are commonly referred to as Cheeseheads, and it produces roughly a quarter of all cheese made in the United States annually. The state also contains the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore on Lake Superior, a collection of 21 islands featuring sea caves carved into sandstone cliffs, and House on the Rock near Spring Green, one of the most eccentric and visited attractions in the Midwest, built atop a 60-foot chimney of rock by architect Alex Jordan beginning in the 1940s.
