SOUTH CAROLINA

Rhode Island is the smallest state in the United States but has a historical significance disproportionate to its size, having been founded in 1636 by Roger Williams as one of the first political entities in the world to enshrine the separation of church and state. Newport’s Gilded Age mansions, including the Breakers and Marble House built by the Vanderbilt family in the 1890s, represent the most intact collection of late 19th century American wealth architecture in the country, and the city’s harbor was one of the most important in colonial-era America.
