MISSISSIPPI

Mississippi sits at the origin point of American blues music, with the Mississippi Delta region producing a musical tradition in the late 19th and early 20th centuries that became one of the most influential in the world, traceable through the juke joints of Clarksdale and the history preserved at the Delta Blues Museum. The state also contains Vicksburg National Military Park, marking the site of a 47-day siege in 1863 whose outcome gave the Union control of the Mississippi River and effectively split the Confederacy in two.
