Ethiopia is one of the oldest countries in the world, with a continuous recorded history stretching back more than 3,000 years and a civilization that produced its own script, calendar, and Christian tradition largely independent of outside influence. It is the only African country never to have been colonized by a European power, having repelled an Italian invasion at the Battle of Adwa in 1896.
