The United States Virgin Islands is an unincorporated territory of the United States in the northeastern Caribbean, consisting primarily of the islands of Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas. The territory was purchased from Denmark in 1917 for $25 million, primarily for its strategic position at the entrance to the Caribbean Sea, and its residents are United States citizens but, like those of Puerto Rico, cannot vote in presidential elections.
