ISRAEL
Israel is a country on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea, bordered by Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Egypt, with a southern outlet to the Red Sea at the Gulf of Aqaba. It was established as a state in 1948 following a United Nations partition plan for the former British Mandate of Palestine and contains sites of central religious significance to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, including Jerusalem, a city whose political and territorial status remains one of the most contested issues in contemporary international relations.
