ARMENIA

Armenia is a small landlocked country in the South Caucasus, bordered by Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iran, and Georgia. It was the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as its state religion, doing so in 301 CE, and developed its own unique alphabet in the early 5th century, which remains in use today. The Armenian Apostolic Church has been a central institution in preserving national identity through centuries of foreign rule and displacement, including the Armenian Genocide of 1915, in which an estimated 1.5 million Armenians were killed under the Ottoman Empire.
