Paraguay is a landlocked country in central South America, bordered by Argentina, Bolivia, and Brazil. The Paraguay River divides the country into two distinct regions: the densely populated eastern region, which contains the capital Asunción; and the Gran Chaco to the west, a vast semi-arid plain that covers roughly 60 percent of the country’s total land area but is home to less than three percent of its population.
