HAITI

Haiti occupies the western third of the island of Hispaniola and became the world’s first Black republic in 1804, following the only successful slave-led revolution in recorded history. It was the first country in the western hemisphere to abolish slavery, though the decades following independence were marked by significant political instability and a punishing debt imposed by France in exchange for diplomatic recognition.
