Senegal is a West African country on the Atlantic coast, bordered by Mauritania, Mali, Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau, and nearly surrounding the smaller country of Gambia on three sides. Its capital, Dakar, sits at the westernmost point of the African mainland and served as the administrative capital of French West Africa, making it one of the region’s most historically significant colonial-era cities.
