MAURITANIA
Mauritania is a large, sparsely populated country in northwestern Africa, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, Western Sahara, Algeria, Mali, and Senegal. Roughly 90 percent of its territory is covered by the Sahara Desert, and its ancient city of Chinguetti was historically one of the most important caravan and pilgrimage centers in the western Sahara.
