Mali is a large landlocked country in West Africa, bordered by Algeria, Niger, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Senegal, and Mauritania. It was the center of several of medieval Africa’s most powerful empires, including the Mali Empire under Mansa Musa, and the city of Timbuktu remains one of the most significant historical centers of Islamic scholarship in the world.
