It contains some of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, including Damascus and Aleppo, and was a significant center of ancient and medieval civilization before coming under Ottoman rule in the 16th century. Since 2011, the country has been engaged in a civil war that has resulted in one of the largest displacement crises in modern history.
