North Dakota contains Theodore Roosevelt National Park, spread across the badlands of the Little Missouri River valley where Roosevelt ranched in the 1880s and which he later credited as the landscape that shaped his conservation philosophy. The Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site preserves the remains of the largest known Hidatsa earthlodge village complex on the Great Plains, and the International Peace Garden on the Canadian border, maintained jointly by the United States and Canada, has operated as a symbol of the two countries’ shared border since 1932.
