NEBRASKA

Nebraska’s Sandhills region, a vast landscape of grass-stabilized sand dunes covering roughly a quarter of the state, is one of the largest and least disturbed grassland ecosystems in the Great Plains and provides critical habitat for migratory birds along the Central Flyway. Scotts Bluff National Monument and Chimney Rock, a natural spire rising 300 feet above the North Platte River valley, were among the most recognizable landmarks on the Oregon Trail and served as navigation points for the hundreds of thousands of emigrants who crossed the state in the mid-19th century.
