If you aren’t feeling invested in your career right now, you’re not alone.
In fact, 40% of employees are toying with the idea of a career change. While this can be daunting, especially if you feel comfortable in your current role, it is important to remember that you deserve to be happy at work.
Your job should be more than a way to get by. It should provide you with a sense of fulfillment, even if you can’t expect every day to be perfect and stress-free. With that in mind, here’s some useful advice you can follow to find a career or job that you genuinely care about.
Think about what’s important to you. When finding a career you are genuinely passionate about, you should consider what is important to you or the causes close to your heart. Finding a role that aligns with this means you can dedicate your time and energy to work that feels valuable and meaningful. For example, if you’re interested in the environment and sustainability, you could look into an environmental engineering career.

Think about your long-term goals. The chances of walking straight into your dream job are slim, especially if you’re entering an industry you need to become more familiar with. Of course, you must seek a role that’ll lead you toward your long-term goals. Keep an eye out for roles with a clear progression route within a specific company or industry so that you can gradually work your way up.
You should also prepare yourself for the challenge(s) that come alongside taking on an entirely new position, being mindful that you will likely feel somewhat out of your depth. By adopting the right attitude and being willing to learn, you’ll quickly feel up to speed and ready to attack your new role.
Think about your expectations and lifestyle. You must ensure that you are fairly compensated for your work and can support yourself (and your lifestyle) moving forward. This could change the kind of roles you are applying for. If you find that one job doesn’t cut it, you might be interested in pursuing overemployment—especially if you want to work remotely.
Keep an eye out for flexible work. Companies that take a more flexible approach to work may give you exactly the freedom and support you want. If you have a keen interest in travel but aren’t yet ready to take the leap and become a digital nomad, companies that allow you to work remotely or even from abroad for a certain period of time are a great middle ground. After all, this means that you do not need to put your ambition to travel on hold in favor of reaching your career goals—though you will need to make sure that you’re always somewhere with a good internet connection!
