MARTINIQUE

Martinique is a French island territory in the Lesser Antilles, functioning as both an overseas region and department of France, which gives it full membership in the European Union. It is dominated geographically by Mount Pelée, an active stratovolcano whose 1902 eruption destroyed the city of Saint-Pierre and killed an estimated 30,000 people in one of the deadliest volcanic events in recorded history.
