Road trips are a uniquely special way to travel, allowing us to experience the journey just as much as the destination. They’re not just about zipping from point A to point B—it’s the delightful stops along the way that elevate our experience. Rolling down the windows, playing our favorite songs, and making spontaneous, memory-packed stops is a fantastic way to explore, whether traveling solo, with family, or with friends.
One of our favorite areas of the USA to take a weekend trip is around the Mid-Atlantic—and if you’re a fan of the all-American road trip, here are some must-see spots to check out in that region!
Princeton, New Jersey
Known for its ivy-league aura, thanks to Princeton University, this charming town offers much more than academic prestige. A meandering walk through the downtown feels like stepping into a colonial-era fairy tale. Don’t miss the Princeton University Art Museum, which houses an impressive blend of classic and contemporary art pieces. When hunger strikes, head to the Bent Spoon, an artisanal ice cream parlor famous for its farm-fresh flavors. Afterward, take a leisurely stroll around Palmer Square, lined with boutique shops and cozy cafes, setting the perfect tone for your journey.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Philadelphia is iconic for its place in American history and contemporary urban vibes. Independence Hall is a must-see; this is where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were debated and adopted, plus you can see the Liberty Bell right across the street. For gastronomical delights, Reading Terminal Market is the place to be. It’s a whirlwind of flavors and aromas with over 75 different vendors—try a cheesesteak here, and you won’t be disappointed! For a sweet treat, check out Beiler’s Doughnuts. Beyond food and history, stop at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which boasts world-class collections and the famous Rocky Steps. And for something quirky, the Magic Gardens, with its mosaic-filled outdoor labyrinth, is a visual treat.
Wilmington, Delaware
Wilmington may be known as a business hub, but it’s also home to plenty of hidden charm and culinary delights. One standout spot is The Quoin Restaurant, where you can enjoy food inspired by Italian cuisine with unique spins on Mediterranean classics. After your meal, a stroll along the Riverfront will help you digest (or find some extra treats!). The Delaware Contemporary, featuring rotating modern art exhibits, offers a fantastic artistic break as well.
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania
Lancaster presents a serene landscape filled with rolling fields and horse-drawn buggies—picture-perfect Amish country. The town of Lititz is an especially cool small-town stop with easy access to leaf peeping and other fun road trip activities. Swing by the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery, where they’ll let you twist your pretzels, combining history with a fun, hands-on activity. Lancaster Central Market, one of the oldest farmer’s markets in the US, is a must-visit for fresh produce, baked goods, and more.
Plan loosely, explore freely, and enjoy every mile of this memorable journey!
