You’re rushing through the airport, coffee in one hand, boarding pass in the other, when you remember—can I even bring this through TSA? Or maybe you packed a water bottle to stay hydrated on your flight, but now you’re wondering if it’s allowed.
The short answer? It depends. Here’s what you need to know before you reach security.
Can You Bring a Cup of Coffee Through TSA?
If it’s full: Nope. TSA follows the 3.4-ounce (100ml) liquid rule, which means your grande almond latte isn’t making it past the security checkpoint. They’ll ask you to drink it, dump it, or leave it behind.
If it’s empty: Yes! If you have a reusable coffee cup or thermos, you can bring it through security—as long as it’s completely empty.
If you really need caffeine ASAP, you can bring an empty cup through security and fill it up at a coffee shop inside the terminal.
Can You Bring a Water Bottle Through TSA?
If it’s full: No. Just like coffee, a full water bottle won’t make it through. Even if it’s sealed, TSA agents will make you pour it out.
If it’s empty: Yes! You can bring any size empty water bottle and refill it once you’re past security. Most airports have water refill stations near restrooms.
You can also buy a bottle of water after security, but look out for those airport prices!
Are There Any Exceptions?
Yes! TSA makes exceptions for:
- Baby formula and breast milk: You can bring more than 3.4 ounces, but it may require additional screening.
- Liquid medications: If you need liquid medicine, you can bring more than the limit, but let TSA know beforehand.
- Frozen liquids: If your drink is completely frozen when you go through security, it might be allowed, but once it starts melting or gets slushy, you’re probably going to have to dump it.
