The Amazon Rainforest. Galapagos Islands. Mayan ruins. Latin America (comprising Central and South America) has endless opportunity to explore, discover, and immerse yourself in vibrant history and culture – and along with it, an enormous variety of impactful volunteer projects for travelers from all walks of life.
My first volunteer abroad experience was with a sea turtle conservation project in Costa Rica in 2005 – and I’ve been hooked on volunteer-traveling around Latin America ever since. And can you blame me? With rainforests, volcanoes, beaches, and plateaus, Latin America is one of the most gorgeously diverse regions of the world. It’s also one of the most diverse in terms of development: for example, Brazil is the seventh-richest country in the world, though 35 percent of its population lives in poverty. A Google search for “travel to Honduras” returns travel warnings among the first results, but between those links are inspirational and adventurous stories about snorkeling, zip lining, and archaeological exploration.
